BOOK COVER DESIGN INCORPORATING A PENCIL SKETCH ILLUSTRATION We urgently need a cover design with a pencil sketch (or similar) illustration which is in essence a collection of pleasurable memories. Originally we had planned 10 sketches scattered through the book, and to use one of them on the cover, but the artist has let us down at the last minute and time is of the essence, so we are settling for a cover image only. The cover itself might have an old-fashioned feel such as rich leather-bound books might have had, but we leave the design to you. The author is late-sixties, academic, and wants something fairly plain. The publisher nonetheless wants something that catches the eye and will sell well. :-) BRIEF FOR SKETCH: The sands of a shallow seafront at low tide, stretching far out before the water is visible. Various sights of the under-sea that are not visible at high tide. The description below gives lots of visions to choose from; whichever inspires you will be fine. The important part to note is the comparison of the low tide, with the feelings we humans sometimes have when our spirits are low and depressed. TEXT OF PIECE: There is something profoundly satisfying about high tide. It is not just its reliability. After all, low tide is just as predictable, but low tide has quite a different feel. There is both an openness and a devilry about low tide. I’ve nothing to hide, she says, and shows you all. Sometimes she reveals secrets, especially at the spring tides when she recedes to uncover petrified forests, wrecks, unexploded bombs or rock pools unused to exposure. Beneath this candour, this frankness, however, there lies cunning and seduction. I’ll show you a cave, she hints, just an hour along the beach beneath the cliffs past the headland. And indeed there is a wonderful cave, moist and dripping, smelling of salt and seaweed. It becomes quite submerged as the tide rises as you would be if you lingered. “Come for a walk,” she says, “it’s easy to get from Hastings to Pett Level beneath Fairlight and the Firehills”, and so it is if you get a move on, if you do not succumb to her wiles on the way, her attractions and distractions, as long as you do not stare too long into deep, fronded pools, turn up stones or old lobster pots, explore this ridge, or take a rest on that private patch of sand. Equally you can walk beneath the skirts of the Seven Sisters at low tide, returning over the roller coaster downs, seven climbs up and seven down. But even along the beach the going is tough and slow. There are big boulders to work round, slippery rocks to negotiate, large irregular stepping stones to leap, barnacle encrusted rocks interspersed with treacherous green slime topped surfaces, hard flints in smooth chalk basins filled with butterfly blue water and tiny darting fish. One slip, one twisted ankle and you are bait for the crabs and the eels. And low tide would gurgle and chuckle next time round. You may become intimate with low tide but you should never trust her. She will distract you, lead you into ambush, cut you off and abandon you. She will ground your boat, hole your hull. If you are on foot she will not do the dirty work herself. She will appear safe and reassuring but when she turns she will send the sea to fetch you. Low tide is a depressive, a down and out. Always wet and weepy, muddy and mournful, she grieves and hungers silently. But she always recovers her humour, gathers up her energy and her resolve and when the tide turns she leaps back with a vengeance to merge and become one with her other half, the high tide. They live at the extreme edges of the same truth. ------------- SPECS: TITLE: A Little Book of Pleasures AUTHOR: William Wood 300 dpi, CMYK image, in layered PSD format (not merged please).
