The Background Essential has been innovating for big companies and small since 2009. We were born out of a partnership with the German matchmaking site Be2, and for most of our existence, our focus has been on driving game-changing innovation in the context of web applications and mobile apps. As of 2020, we are merging with Instigate. While they are significantly larger (190 people to our 18 people), our portfolios are highly complementary, with much of their work focused on AI, blockchain, and AI-focused applications. Two essential aspects of our combined history are relevant to this brief: a) Combined, we are an innovation force that is as good or better than any on the planet. From an engineering perspective, no other company can innovate on crazy hard, fundamentally new technologies. b) Our combined business development and marketing has been terrible. Our Web presence is woefully weak, and we need to urgently grow this capacity, particularly given the global downturn. The Business Objective of the New Website The business objective of this new website is to clearly and indisputably position Essential one of the premier innovation houses in the whole world. We do the types of projects others can’t and innovate in ways they simply don’t. Some clients will read this website in detail, but the bulk will look at a few pages, and they must come away thinking, “Gosh! These guys look amazing. I HAVE to work with them!” The Target Consumer We are targeting three groups with this website: a) CEOs, CTOs, and investors in leading-edge, post-revenue start-ups in the US. These men (and sometimes women) are focused on one thing and one thing only – speed. While finding developers is a struggle, finding game-changing, top-tier developers is almost impossible. In terms of experiences with outsourcing, they have certainly worked with outsourcing companies before, and they don’t generally expect much from them. They tend to think that outsourced resources are added labor, but not added innovators. b) CEOs, CTOs, and Team Leads from small-to-mid-sized companies that are feeling threatened by the disruption that start-ups are creating in their industry. They know that they need to move faster, but they just don’t know how to do it. If start-ups are finding it hard to recruit, these companies are finding it almost impossible to do so. So they are very experienced with working with outsourcing companies, but as with our start-up target, they don’t expect much more from them than added labor. c) Potential Employees. The market for top talent has become incredibly tight in Armenia and around the world. We need to position ourselves as the employer of choice for high-value talent. A great website is a key to that. The Core Consumer Insight “I need to innovate faster, or I simply won’t be competitive. Frankly, speed to innovation is everything for us. It’s our lifeblood and yet by far our biggest problem.” The Single-Mindedly Unique Positioning Essential accelerates the future. We help innovators develop disruptive IP at lightspeed. Reasons to Believe This Positioning 1. We are Armenian. 2. We hire exclusively from the top 10% of the Armenian market and have a feeder program to grow and raise the best possible talent. 3. We organize this talent into nests of no more than 50 people and religiously focus on creating a flat culture of curiosity, learning, and meritocracy. 4. We are 35% female. That’s an INSANE number in the rest of the world. We believe in the advantage that the female perspective brings to technology. 5. We are always focused first on business problem statements and not technology. 6. We’ve got an incredible track record of world-firsts and bleeding-edge, enterprise-grade innovation. The Essential Brand Character - Hugely confident/bold, without being arrogant. - Edgy enough to attract hot start-ups, but big enough to not scare away corporates. - Urgency. We understand that this is a game of speed to competitive advantage. - Fun Learners. We love discovery and have a great time doing it. Mandatories/Considerations - We need to create an extraordinarily emotional and visual site. Our industry is full of companies whose sites say all the same things: “We are developers.” “We help you.” and “You can trust us.” Blah. Blah. Blah. We want to scream out with our hair on fire: “WANNA CHANGE THE WORLD TOGETHER? LET’S DO IT! HANG ON! IT’S GOING TO BE ONE AMAZING RIDE!” - We are building our brand on the back of Armenia. Most of our customers will never have heard of Armenia before and likely confuse Armenia with Albania. Our site needs to so impress that our target that, even if they don’t ever work with us, they go away thinking amazing things about Armenia. - Please refer to our brand guidelines.
